Kaleidoscope:

A Spectrum of Movement and Sound

Call for Scores:

Austin Camerata and Ventana Ballet come together in May 2025 to perform Kaleidoscope, a spectrum of movement and sound, featuring a variety of short works for string quartet by living composers with original choreography by Ventana Ballet.

Composers selected will receive a live performance video recording and the opportunity to work directly with musicians and dancers during the rehearsal process (in-person if composer lives in Austin, Texas, otherwise via video conference). Works chosen for choreography will receive a $200 grand rights fee and works chosen for musical interludes will receive a $100 honorarium.

What we are looking for:

  • Works for traditional string quartet format: two violins, viola, cello

  • Works approx 5-15 minutes long that would be exciting to bring to life with dance choreography. Works under 5 minutes in length will be considered for musical interludes on the program between dance pieces.

  • Works need not have been composed with dance choreography in mind.

  • You may submit multiple works and/or movements as long as they are for string quartet and in the 5-15 minute range.

  • Recordings (or if none exist, midi files) are strongly encouraged.

  • Music will be selected by a panel of Ventana Ballet choreographers and Austin Camerata's artistic director.

  • Submissions from any composer, regardless of age or citizenship, are welcome.

Deadline: All materials must be submitted by December 31st, 2024.

Results: Composers will be notified of selections by March 15th, 2025

By submitting to this call, the composer gives permission to record audio of the concert in which the submitted piece is included, and upon winning, to provide Austin Camerata with a headshot, biography, and the score and parts in PDF format.
